Cisco shares rise 4 pct after Chambers comments - RTRS

NEW YORK, April 6 (Reuters) - Cisco Systems Inc CSCO.O investors like what they are hearing from John Chambers.

Shares of Cisco were up more than 4 percent in early afternoon on Wednesday in response to the chief executive's surprising internal memo in which he says the networking giant has been slow to make decisions, fallen down on execution and lacked discipline in an aggressive expansion.

The memo, circulated on Tuesday, was widely viewed as the first step toward turning things around at the one-time technology bellwether, whose shares have lost a third of their value over the past 52 weeks ID:nN05159515 .

"Denial, being upset and then acceptance are the necessary sequence of emotions people experience before moving on toward a recovery," said RBC Capital Markets analyst Mark Sue.

"It's no different for companies, and Cisco is acknowledging that it's made some missteps and is working to move forward and address its organizational complexity, lack of competitive products, focus, and time to market," he added in a research note.

In past years, with the likes of Hewlett-Packard HPQ.N China's Huawei HWT.UL and Oracle ORCL.O increasingly coming to the fore or reworking themselves into one-stop hardware-software businesses, Cisco's dominance in networking has come under attack.

Some analysts, including Morningstar's Grady Burkett and RBC's Sue, have also said the company has expanded too far into areas such as set-top boxes and other consumer devices. Both analysts said Cisco may now look at scaling back in the consumer area.

"As a company, bigger is not always better, especially if there aren't any synergies across multiple business units," Sue said in his note. "Optical, application delivery, Linksys, set-top boxes, Flip, and Umi are some segments that we think should be cut."

RBC has an outperform rating on the stock.

Shares of Cisco were up 71 cents at $17.93 on the Nasdaq, making it the biggest gainer on the exchange.
