Despite reassurances to the contrary, there are new rumors out there that Brazil’s new president may be flirting with replacing the CEO of state-controlled Petrobras.
O Globo is reporting that Dilma Rousseff may replace Jose Sergio Gabrielli as head of gigantic oil concern PBR, the biggest company in Latin America but still 64% controlled by Brasilia.
As far as the report goes, Dilma is apparently considering Luciano Coutinho, head of the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) to run PBR.
The change would theoretically give the government more sway in how PBR serves the people — and give Gabrielli a chance to return to his academic career after five years of running the company — but clashes with everything Dilma and her mentor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have said about leaving PBR alone.
One of Lula’s last official statements before leaving office December 31 was to reiterate that Gabrielli would stay right where he is.
If there is a change at the top — mandated by political factors — it is very negative indeed for PBR. The company needs to be able to act in is own best interests, and shareholders need to know that
