Braskem has launched a plan to strengthen the plastics converting sector in Brazil, the company has announced. Braskem will provide a series of initiatives under the Plastic Chain Incentive Plan, including investments to increase the volume of exported plastic goods; enhance innovation; and improve professional and managerial skills in companies within this sector. Braskem, to facilitate the implementation of the plan, will intensify and formalize partnerships with customers, industry associations, development agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and Brazil's economic development bank BNDES.
The main objective is help boost the volume of plastic goods exported from Brazil. The initiative seeks to double the export volume of polyethylene and polypropylene finished goods within two years. Exports of these types of plastic product totaled about 238,000 m.t. in 2012. Braskem is also hoping to increase the competitiveness of the plastic converting sector via capacity-building initiatives; training manpower; and providing technical lectures and access to expert advice.
"We want Brazil's chemical industry to be better prepared to compete, on equal terms, in all markets, by developing a comprehensive program that combines business benefits, training, and investment in innovation. [This] will help reduce the trade deficit in the sector," says Luciano Guidolin, v.p./polyolefins and renewables at Braskem.
The company aims to stimulate market growth by fostering innovation through joint investment in consulting; training programs; and sponsoring industry events. The plan also includes a campaign promoting the advantages of plastics, which will be developed in collaboration with the converting industry. This aspect of the plan will focus on sustainability and recycling.
