Gazprom loses EU court ruling, limits access to Nord Stream pipeline link
Sept. 10, 2019 10:34 AM ETPublic Joint Stock Company Gazprom (OGZPY)By: Carl Surran, SA News Editor12 Comments
Europe's top court overrules a European Commission decision that allowed Russia's Gazprom (OTCPK:OGZPY) to ship more gas through the Opal gas pipeline, which links its Nord Stream pipeline to Germany.
The ruling by the European Union Court of Justice is a victory for Poland and other eastern European nations, which have fought Gazprom's plans to double Nord Stream's capacity and bypass legacy gas routes through Ukraine and Poland, stripping them of lucrative transit fees.
The ruling means Gazprom's access reverts to the conditions before the EC decision, limiting it to 12.8B cm/year of the 36.5B cm/year capacity Opal line; the previous EC decision had allowed Gazprom to bid for up to 12.8B cm/year of extra capacity.
Gazprom's European partners in Nord Stream are Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A, RDS.B), Germany's Uniper (OTC:UNPPY) and BASF (OTCQX:BASFY), Austria's OMV (OTCPK:OMVJF) and France's Engie (OTCPK:ENGIY).

Nord Stream 2 pipeline completion still on schedule, executive says
Aug. 29, 2019 12:53 PM ETPublic Joint Stock Company Gazprom (OGZPY)By: Carl Surran, SA News Editor36 Comments
The consortium building the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia to Germany expects to complete the project on schedule in early 2020 or before, after speculation that it could face months of delays, according to the CEO of one of the investors.
OMV CEO Rainer Seele says more than 75% of the project was finished by the timing for the completion would depend on securing Danish approval for the pipeline to cross its waters of the Baltic Sea.
The project, led by Russia's Gazprom (OTCPK:OGZPY), has had applications pending with Danish authorities since April 2017 seeking approval to lay pipe in Denmark's Baltic waters.
Gazprom's European partners in the project are Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A, RDS.B), Germany's Uniper (OTC:UNPPY) and BASF (OTCQX:BASFY), Austria's OMV (OTCPK:OMVJF) and France's Engie (OTCPK:ENGIY).
Separately, Gazprom says its Q2 net income rose 16% Y/Y to 300.6B rubles ($4.55B) but revenues ticked lower to 1.78T rubles from 1.83T rubles in the same period last year.

Total, Novatek and the other project shareholders have approved the final investment decision (FID) for Arctic LNG 2, a major liquefied natural gas (LNG) development located on the Gydan peninsula, Russia. The project will have a production capacity of 19.8 million tons per year (Mt/y) and is expected to export its first LNG cargo by 2023, the second and third train to start up by 2024 and 2026.
Total has a direct 10% interest in Arctic LNG 2 alongside Novatek (60%), CNOOC (10%), CNPC (10%) and a Mitsui-Jogmec consortium, Japan Arctic LNG (10%). Total also owns an 11.6% indirect participation in the project through its 19.4% stake in Novatek, thus an aggregated economic interest of 21.6% in the project.
“Arctic LNG 2 will leverage the success of the Yamal LNG project and will deliver competitive LNG to the markets in four years’ time," commented Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of Total. “Arctic LNG 2 adds to our growing portfolio of competitive LNG developments based on giant low cost resources primarily intended for the fast growing Asian markets.”
