RIO DE JANEIRO (Dow Jones)--Brazilian state-run energy giant Petroleo Brasileiro SA (PBR, PETR4.BR) was the second most-profitable company in the U.S. and Latin America in 2009, according to a study released Monday.
Petrobras registered a 2009 net profit of $16.645 billion when converted to dollars using the BM&FBovespa exchange's average daily foreign-exchange rate used to settle futures contracts, or Ptax, financial consultancy Economatica said. Late Friday, Petrobras said that it earned a net profit of 28.9 billion Brazilian reals in 2009.
The 2009 net profit figure would place Petrobras second in the U.S. and Latin America behind the $19.28 billion net profit recorded by U.S. oil major Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM).
Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) was the third most-profitable company in 2009 at $16.258 billion, followed by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) at $13.495 and International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) at $13.425, according to Economatica.
