George Soros Buys Adecoagro (AGRO) Petrobras (PBR) after selling Delta Airlines (DAL) (GLD) (SLV)
Petrobras (PBR) and Adecoagro (AGRO) are George Soros Buys
George Soros has reduced his positions in gold (NYSE: GLD), silver (NYSE: SLV), JP Morgan (NYSE: JPM), Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) and Delta Airlines (NYSE:DAL ) while loading up on Petroleo Brasilerio SA (NYSE: PBR ), an integrated oil and gas company owned by the government of Brazil, and Adecoagro SA, (NASDAQ: AGRO), a small cap play on the farm economy in South America.
George Soros largest stake, 27.2 million shares, is now in Adecoagro SA (AGRO), a South American agricultural conglomerate that went public in January. This position is worth about $370 million. Soros owns about one quarter of the shares of AGRO. It now closed yesterday at $11.20 a share. The year low for AGRO is $10.09 and the year high is $13.91. The consensus target price for Adecoagro SA among Wall Street analysts is $15.90. It has $3.32 in revenue per share and a book value per share of $6.26.
A 1.1 million share position in Petrobras (PBR) has also been established by George Soros. The state run oil and gas company, Petrobras shares have not kept up with other oil company stocks due to the Brazilian Government diluting the stock last year to fund the acquisition of an offshore driller. Petrobas is now trading for under $34 a share. The year high for Petrobras was almost $43 a share with the year low at $31.21. It has not kept pace with the rise in oil or other commodities such as GLD and SLV. Petrobras has a very low institutional ownership rate of only 9 percent. For those looking for income, Petrobras pays a dividend that yields almost 3.7 percent. With his buy of Petrobas (PBR) and sale of Delta Airlines (NYSE: DAL), Soros is staking a position that oil will continue to rise. When oil increases, airline stocks such as Delta (DAL) plunge while oil company share prices rise (as Petrobras has yet to do, however).
George Soros is hardly the only uber investor to focus his investments on growth in Brazil. Jim Rogers, co founder of the Quantum Fund and creator of the Rogers International Commodities Index, and John Burbank III, founder of Passport Capital, are also bullish on the region. “The supply of oil, commodities and things that come out of the ground isn't changing that much, and the demand keeps growing, so the price is generally going higher," Burbank notes. About one quarter of Passport’s portfolio is in basic materials like iron ore and gold mining companies. With his buys in Adecoagro SA (AGRO) and Petrobras SA (PBR), Soros is investing with the same outlook
